The past month the nation has been focused on two main events and incidentally each are at different parts of the globe. First, attention was focused on the continuing crisis in the Ukraine and for the past three weeks the nation has been transfixed by the ongoing sage of the missing Malaysian jetliner.
The one missing component that has been pushed off the front page is the upcoming healthcare deadline on March 31st. Next Monday the open enrollment period for the Affordable Care Act or as it’s commonly known as “Obamacare” will end.
The March 31st deadline for Obamacare is where individuals who do not have health insurance will face a tax penalty.
The issue right now is how many individuals have actually signed up. The health care law has always been predicated in getting enough young and healthy individuals to offset the cost of older and less healthy individuals.
The Obama administration has been touting that enrollment has now reached around 5 million individuals, but this does not belay the entire aspect of what is needed to keep the system solvent.
This is far short of the 7 million individuals the administration touted was needed
It’s not how many have enrolled in health care, but how many have completed the entire process to include paying their first premium. So far the administration has not released this data as of yet.
Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius was asked this question while testifying on Capitol Hill this month, when pressed by members of Congress, “I can’t tell you because I don’t know that.”
Even White House spokesman Josh Earnest said, “Questions about who exactly has paid for the health insurance can best be directed to those private insurance companies that are collecting those payments.”
This is a key component because if not enough individuals sign up then it affects the solvency of the entire system. Health insurers will then have to raise premiums on everyone else and embedded into the Affordable Care Act is a provision to bail out the insurance companies to keep them solvent.
Now I know I have written previous articles about this issue, and to many this may seem redundant, but this needs to be asked. Neither the insurance companies nor the administration have given a full and accurate accounting of how many individuals have signed up and went through the entire process and made a payment.
Both Republicans and Democrats have staked opposing positions on this controversial law. Republicans have always wanted to end Obamacare but have not coalesced around one particular plan.
Democrats have always reiterated and stated they want to fix Obamacare not repeal it, but they have not mentioned what areas they would fix.
As of right now Obamacare is more unpopular than ever before, and according to the Pew Research Center 53 percent now disapprove of the law compared with 41 percent who say they approve.
Finally, the last question which definitely needs to be addressed by the administration and eventually reassessed by the Congressional Budget Office is what is the real cost of the Affordable Care Act?
With all the exemptions and delays to the health care law, what is the final cost of this bill; that is a good question, because right now no one knows.
Congress and the media need to be asking these questions or we will reap what we sow.
