President Donald Trump on Friday slammed CNN for “blaming” him for a rash of potentially explosive devices mailed to prominent Democrats and CNN this week, complaining that he is held to a different standard as president that does not apply to his critics.
“Funny how lowly rated CNN, and others, can criticize me at will, even blaming me for the current spate of Bombs and ridiculously comparing this to September 11th and the Oklahoma City bombing,” Trump said in a tweet posted just after 3 a.m. “Yet when I criticize them they go wild and scream, ‘it’s just not Presidential!’”
CNN’s New York headquarters were evacuated on Wednesday after receiving the package intended for Brennan, who does not work for the network but is an analyst for NBC News. The bomb scare prompted CNN president Jeff Zucker to release a statement excoriating the White House for its rhetoric regarding the media.
In the aftermath of the incidents, despite calls for unity and for tamping down divisive rhetoric, a blame game of sorts has emerged, with critics of the president suggesting that his incendiary rhetoric could have encouraged someone to mail the potentially explosive devices. Allies of the president, in turn, have rejected such talk and have instead pushed the narrative that Trump is another victim of the bomb scare.
Some among the president’s defenders have suggested that the series of suspicious packages could be a false flag operation of sorts, orchestrated by an opponent of Trump in order to hurt him politically in the weeks leading up to next month’s election.
Investigators have yet to name a suspect or announce a motive for the mailings.
