As the nation begins the laborious task of selecting who will be the next President of the United States, one thing which needs to happen is to challenge all presidential candidates on how they would deal with the U.S. economy.
On Saturday, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton relaunched her presidential campaign at Roosevelt Island in New York, and listed off numerous items she would pursue if elected president.
Some of the items Clinton mentioned have universal appeal to the base of her party, but has anyone asked or pressed her on how her pronouncements will be paid for and implemented?
On Monday, Jeb Bush announced his candidacy for president and he touted many things he would like to accomplish if elected president, and again has anyone pressed him or other Republican candidates in detail on their economic vision?
Now for the sake of all candidates, speaking at campaign rallies, one only speaks in generic terms and just lays out basic policy initiatives, but the media needs to do their job and truly challenge all candidates on how they will deal with the U.S. economy.
The greatest concern for voters is the state of the U.S. economy. Many have seen stagnate wages, few meaningful employment prospects, plus the nation is now saddled with enormous debt of over $18 trillion and growing.
Small businesses the life blood of this country are feeling the pain from all sides and the progressive Brookings Institute reported last year that new start-up businesses are at the lowest level ever recorded.
We need answers to these pressing issues.
In the coming weeks the candidates need to start laying out their policy proposals in more detail, so all have the chance to understand and properly analyze their economic plans.
If a candidate fails or hinders access to the media or one that is more prevalent in which they try to control who asks questions, this sort of practice needs to be exposed.
The nation should understand what vision each candidate has for the U.S. economy, and the media has to do its job and not fawn over one candidate and challenge another, the stakes are two great.
