It could not have gotten any worse for President Obama’s handling of foreign policy, but it did, when his Secretary of State John Kerry virtually alienated all sides in his quest for a cease fire between Israel and Hamas.
Israeli issued a stinging rebuke of the Secretary of State as siding with Hamas without considering how the proposed cease fire would impact Israel’s security.
Newsweek Magazine reported, Israelis believe US Secretary of State John Kerry’s week-long ceasefire negotiations has firmly placed the US in the camp of Qatar and Turkey, both of which back the militant government of Hamas, while it has sidelined its traditional allies: Egypt, Jordan and Saudi Arabia — as well as offended the Palestinian Authority, Hamas’s rival for the leadership of the Palestinians.
Israeli officials commented that the cease fire Kerry was perusing focused more on rebuilding Gaza once the cease fire ended and ending the blockage of Gaza, but it failed to mention Hamas or Palestinian Islamic jihad by name. The biggest omission in the cease fire was identifying the caches of rockets and tunnels, which are the biggest fundamental causes of the current conflict.
Newsweek continued to report that officials from Egypt, the Palestinian Authority, Saudi Arabia and Jordan, to name a few interested parties, watched with astonishment over the weekend as Kerry engaged in Paris with Khalid al-Attiyah and Ahmet Davutoglu, the foreign ministers of Qatar and Turkey. Some European foreign ministers also attended the Paris summit, but the guest list noticeably didn’t include any other Middle Eastern representatives.
Egypt was furious at this change in approach by Kerry especially inviting Turkey and Qatar to the Paris talks it refused to send its foreign minister; instead it launched military operations against Islamists in the eastern part of the Sinai, just west of Gaza.
Writing an opinion in the Washington Post, columnist David Ignatius wrote on Monday, Kerry’s error has been to put so much emphasis on achieving a quick halt to the bloodshed that he has solidified the role of Hamas, the intractable, unpopular Islamist group that leads Gaza, along with the two hard-line Islamist nations that are its key supporters, Qatar and Turkey. In the process, he has undercut not simply the Israelis but also the Egyptians and the Fatah movement that runs the Palestinian Authority, all of which want to see an end to Hamas rule in Gaza.
Kerry is not siding with Hamas, but it shows that the Secretary of State in trying to broker a deal failed to understand the complexities of the Middle East and how various nations are trying to expand its regional power.
Syndicated columnist Charles Krauthammer commented that Kerry goes over and then he negotiates in Paris with who? Qatar and Turkey and returns essentially as the lawyer for Hamas, hands Israel a proposition that is so outrageous that the cabinet votes 19-0 against it. Israeli cabinets have never voted 19-0 on whether the sunrises in the east. It was unbelievable. It would have given Hamas all of its demands. As a result — and there’s one thing he doesn’t seem to understand.
Krauthammer continues, There’s a miracle happening in the Middle East which is a tacit alliance between Israel, Egypt, Jordan, the Palestinian Authority of all people, Saudi Arabia, the UAE and the Gulf Arabs, all of them are our friends who want to see Hamas squeezed, who supported the Arab league, supported the Egyptian peace plan and this entirely undermines
Ignatius continued to comment, by turning to Turkey and Qatar, Kerry also enhanced their position in the regional power game. That’s contrary to the interests and desires of the United States’ traditional allies, such as Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia and the moderate Palestinian camp headed by Abbas.
Instead of alienating Hamas, Kerry has failed to solidify the Palestinian Authority as a legitimate government, as most Palestinians are tired of the cycle of warfare with Israel and want a return to Palestinian Authority control.
Everyone wants the conflict to end, but trying to broker a cease fire without understanding the complexities of the Middle East, or understanding how all the regional players view their role, especially their strategic interests will only make the situation worse not better.
