America is pushing forward with its quest to ensure that all Americans reject their internal combustion engine or as we all know it’s more common name the “automobile,” but are the nation’s political leaders pursuing a policy that will threaten U.S. national security?
The rapid push by President Biden and Democrats to electrify the country has and will have unintended consequences, which will substantially increase consumer costs, impact the nation’s electric grid by making it more vulnerable to rolling blackouts, threaten America’s national security, without leading to reduced greenhouse gas emissions.
In a report, authored by Manhattan Institute senior fellow Mark Mills, titled “Electric Vehicles for Everyone? The Impossible Dream”, states the nation will not reach its lofty goals in the pursuit of electric vehicles.
“I think it’s morally consequential. It’s geopolitically consequential and socially, economically consequential,” Mills told Fox News Digital in an interview. “The subsidies and the mandates run the risk of causing maybe the biggest misallocation of capital in modern times in the industrial markets. Hundreds of billions of dollars are going to be spent chasing these mandates, requirements.”
“And it won’t, as the report shows, it won’t achieve the goals intended and the attempt to do so will have enormous economic and social costs because the underlying premises are either incorrect, too poorly understood or too difficult to quantify in order to take the actions that are being taken,” he continued.
Mills reported that the government’s zeal in mandating the U.S. aggressively transition and push by electrifying the transportation sector over the coming years is solely based on the premise it will both help the environment by lowering economy-wide carbon emissions and help save consumers money through lower fueling costs while keeping car prices co-equal with current prices.
Mills mentioned throughout his report that emissions and the cost associated are subjugated to a wide range of different conditions and not easily quantified.
If you look beyond what Mill articulated in his report and just examine the sheer magnitude of the costs and its impact on U.S. national security and the nation’s economy you can see this will have detrimental impact for America.
As Washington, especially Democrats and the Biden administration, push the electrification of America they fail to mention or address the unhidden truths about the negative consequences by requiring all Americans to have electric vehicles.
Instead of making the cost lower for Americans, as most electric vehicles cost around $55,000, and the key components that go into electric vehicles such as lithium, copper and aluminum have a high cost, as of right now these costs are unlikely to come down anytime in the near future.
The cost of the batteries, which go into electric vehicles, will keep the cost high for the foreseeable future, and since 2021 the costs have risen threefold.
The other issue that is never mentioned by Biden a Democrats is all the rare earth minerals needed are mined outside of the United States such as in the Congo, China, and other unsavory regions of the world. All these countries have very problematic environmental records.
Then you also have to examine and factor in the human capital, which is used to extract the rare earth minerals, often utilized by using slave and child labor with children as young as six years old tolling in these unsafe and dangerous mines.
Right now, a military coup is raging in Niger a prominent African country with bountiful riches of rare earth, a continent in which China is trying to exploit, a country who doesn’t care about the environment or how its extracted as long as they get the rare earth mineral they desire for their economy and vast military apparatus.
With the increased push to electrify the country, the one question that fails to be asked is where will all this extra power come from? Right now the administration is doing everything in its power to eliminate fossil fuel as America’s primary source of energy in favor of wind and solar. The unfortunate aspect of the administration’s pursuit of “green energy” is that you can’t generate enough power by utilizing wind and solar to fuel a modern economy.
Examples abound such as in Europe as the United Kingdom projects electric vehicles to double the demand for electricity by 2040, the problem they don’t have the capacity nor is it being planned! The British government is already planning to ban citizens from charging their vehicles during peak hours.
Germany the largest economy in Europe had to revert back to fossil fuels as they were unable to generate the power needed solely by renewable energy, and experienced a sharp increase in utility prices which hampered the economy.
Just examine California who often and routinely pushes a very aggressive “green agenda” despite being unable to produce enough electricity for the state, despite pushing policies such as banning the sale of gas powered vehicles. It was only last summer the state mandating electric vehicles over gas powered vehicles in a few short years but then day later begged all owners of electric vehicles to stop charging their electric vehicles because the power grid could not handle the need for excess power.
In May, The North American Electric Reliability Corp. (NERC) found that the number of regions with an “elevated risk” of power shortages has increased as temperatures rise and power plants retire. In a worst-case combination of severe heat and unexpected generation outages, the western United States, most of Texas, and the Carolinas face a heightened risk of rolling power blackouts.
This is what potentially is happening happen right now across the country with the record heatwave gripping the country.
NERC also mentioned that this will be the norm and will only get worse in the years to come as greater reliance on electricity as more fossil fuel plants and refineries come off line to be replaced by wind and solar. Unfortunately, not enough renewable energy sources are coming on fast enough to meet demand, plus you will not be able to get enough energy from renewable as they are too intermittent as a primary source.
The state New York is facing the same dilemma as California, in its zeal to pursue a “green agenda,” the state limited and reduced fossil fuel energy in favor of renewable, unfortunately it left New York barley able to meet its energy needs and cost tax payers with higher energy costs.
This is the future for America in its quest for the elimination of fossil fuels in favor of renewable energy they will not be able to meet the nation’s energy needs. The question not asked of the Biden administration, if the U.S. can barely meet its energy needs now how will it cope in the future when you continue to push for greater electrification of the country?
If renewable energy can’t meet the demand now how will wind and solar do so in the future?
America must answer this vital question or its national security will be in peril and consumers will face higher utility and gas prices coupled with continued rolling blackouts each winter and especially in the summer.
