In a last minute lifeline, Congress agreed to fund the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) for an additional week.
This last minute reprieve for DHS places Republicans in a precarious and difficult position as any lack of funding for DHS will shut the agency down beyond essential services, but the blame will fall squarely on congressional Republicans.
The National Journal reported that Intra-party squabbling has undermined Republicans’ ability to exhibit its discipline to govern and it’s allowed Democrats to exercise power in the minority. When Republicans failed to stay together to pass a three-week funding measure for DHS, it allowed Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi to have leverage that may ultimately get everyone to a clean bill by the end of next week.
The National Journal continued the year began with an attempted 25-member coup against House Speaker John Boehner followed by a showdown between GOP women and leaders over abortion. Now, after a month-long debate over the Department of Homeland Security funding bill, leaders are punting a final resolution for another week, a move members say won’t help the party’s reputation.
“All this has done is empower Nancy Pelosi,” says Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart-R-Fla.
With all the political drama Republicans will give what the Democrats and the president have wanted all along a clean bill to fund the Department of Homeland Security.
It seems both parties are still acting the same way as before how sad for our country, partisanship over what is best for the nation
