The coronavirus which has spread across the globe, has virtually shut down the economies of the world, resulting in the deaths of over 32,000 individuals, but the one international organization who should have taken the lead on this pandemic is the World Health Organization (WHO), unfortunately they seem to be taking their cue from China, the very country who originally failed to inform the world of the virus in the first place.

Ever since the coronavirus became known, the WHO has given dubious and inaccurate advice always accepting everything the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) reports or states acting like they are in tandem with each other.

WHO Director under Fire

Many have called for the resignation of WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus for his failure to respond and his too close personal relationship to the original perpetrator of the coronoavirus; the Chinese.

WHO was founded in 1948, as a specialized agency of the United Nations responsible for public health, and headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland.  The original mandate was to reach the insurmountable goal of obtaining the highest level of health for everyone across the globe.

Since its founding WHO has been instrumental in controlling or eradicating communicable diseases, plus investing in healthcare infrastructure across the world, unfortunately the organization in recent years has lost its way, by outsourcing its influence and reputation to the Chinese.

Experts Place Start of Coronavirus at Around October

As the coronavirus spread worldwide, many experts in infectious diseases have placed the time frame of the beginning of COVID-19 at around October, months before the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) even begun to alert the world community about this deadly virus.

Instead of addressing the problem, China arrested journalists and doctors who dared to bring awareness of the virus, even including the Chinese government blocking information on social media, and scrubbing all news stories that were attempting to provide accurate information.   The actions by China prevented early response into stopping the spread of the coronavirus and prevented other countries from beginning early preparations in slowing the spread of the virus.

Throughout the entire process WHO consistently praised the Chinese government for its open “transparency” and “leadership” which made us safer.  As public health professionals across the globe were sounding the alarm about the coronavirus, WHO refused to declare it a public health emergency, and even with all the evidence, it wasn’t until February 10th for WHO to even send and an advance team into China.

WHO Director Meets with Chinese President

On January 28th, Tedros met with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing then commented that “Stopping the spread of this virus both in China and globally is WHO’s highest priority,” said Dr Tedros. “We appreciate the seriousness with which China is taking this outbreak, especially the commitment from top leadership, and the transparency they have demonstrated, including sharing data and genetic sequence of the virus. WHO is working closely with the government on measures to understand the virus and limit transmission.  WHO will keep working side-by-side with China and all other countries to protect health and keep people safe.”

As WHO and Tedros were lavishing praise on Beijing, simultaneously Chinese officials in Wuhan the very heart of the epicenter of the virus, were arresting and punishing anyone who they believed were “spreading rumors” about the coronoavirus, all the while the Chinese government was restricting the online flow of information.

WHO Praises China, while Chinese Leader Allows Hundreds of Thousands to travel

Even while Tedros was meeting with President Xi, the Chinese government allowed hundreds of thousands of infected individuals to travel outside the affected region many went to the U.S. and other countries where they spread the coronavirus turning this into a global pandemic which has claimed the lives of over 35,000, with over 2,600 in the U.S. alone as reported by Real Clear Politics.

Even after this meeting with the Chinese leader WHO and its president still believed the travel ban instituted by President Trump and other nations was unnecessary, had the Trump administration not instituted this ban how many more would have been infected.

During this crucial time period, when action was needed there was considerable debate within WHO’s emergency committee on whether to declare a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC) as the committee was split, with the final authority to declare such action resting with the DG Tedros.

Indecision by WHO Director over Declaring Public Health Emergency

Tedros decided to wait a week before a declaring a PHEIC, despite admitting that “this is an emergency in China,” by the time this was declared the coronavirus had increased to 18 countries and infected close to 8,000 individuals.

Even John Mackenzie, a member of the WHO executive committee, openly stated that international action would have been different if not for China’s “reprehensible” obfuscation of outbreak’s extent.

WHO Director Continues to Praise Chinese Response

With all the evidence of Chinese malfeasance, Tedros continued to heap praise on China even so far as stating at a Munich Security Conference, on February 20th, “We are encouraged that the steps China has taken to contain the outbreak at its source appear to have bought the world time, even though those steps have come at greater cost to China itself. But it’s slowing the spread to the rest of the world.”

Questions have begun to arise as why the WHO indulges with authoritative dictatorships, such as China, instead of holding them accountable for their maleficent and duplicitous manner by acknowledging the serious of the threat posed.  It is also interesting that the largest contributor to the WHO is the United States, as of 2017 allocates a half a billion dollars to the agency, making it its largest contributor.

Since the outbreak of the coronavirus and its eventual global spread few in the U.S. have been openly critical of the leadership of WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Why Does WHO continue to believe China?

Questions should be asked why Tedros consistently repeats the Chinese Communist Party talking points.

Even after the consistent lying and the duplicitous statements from Beijing, why does the WHO still accept reports from China as fact, such as the recent reporting that coronavirus cases have leveled off in China, this is based off what measurable set of health data?

An additional question needs to be asked is how did Tedros become president of the WHO and what role did China play in his election to run the organization.  Why did China press so hard for Tedros?  This has been part of China’s grand strategy is to take over international organizations, to reshape the international system away from the liberal order established by the United States after the Second World War.

Michael Collins a research associate for Asia Studies at the Council on Foreign Relations mentioned that China’s influence in the WHO is also evident in the organization’s treatment of Taiwan. Since China acceded to the UN in 1971, it has periodically blocked Taiwan’s WHO membership on the grounds that the democratically governed island is part of China. From 2009 to 2016, China allowed Taiwan to join the WHO’s decision-making body, the World Health Assembly, as an observer under the name Chinese Taipei. After the election of President Tsai Ing-wen in 2016, cross-strait relations chilled causing China to block Taiwan’s future participation.

This has problematic issues for Taiwan, with its exclusion, and without membership the country must rely on China’s health department during any global health emergency, which often take day’s to weeks to get if it’s accurate at all as we have witnessed during the coronavirus.

Previous WHO Response to past Chinese Pandemic

Tedro’s response pales in comparison to the organizations response to the 2003 SARS outbreak in China.  Collins mentioned that then WHO DG Dr. Gro Harlem Brundtland made history by declaring the WHO’s first travel advisory in 55 years which recommended against travel to and from the disease epicenter in southern China. Dr. Brundtland also criticized China for endangering global health by attempting to cover up the outbreak through its usual playbook of arresting whistleblowers and censoring media.

With this in mind China has consistently used financial incentives for votes as was the case with other international organizations, such as Beijing’s attempt to gain control of the leadership of World Intellectual Property Organization, considering China’s decade’s long theft of intellectual properties.

China Gains Control of WHO

Since 2017, the WHO under Tedros leadership has done the bidding of China and singed agreements that benefited Beijing, with the Chinese Communist Party near takeover of the WHO, it would be illuminating to most American’s that China has done all this while the U.S. taxpayer pays the bills.

The time has come for reforms at the WHO, or are we to wait for an additional pandemic to arise in China, which will be far worse than the last one, do more lives have to be lost before action is taken, the time to act is now, and the time to hold China accountable is now!
